This is by no means a complete comprehensive look at wood finishing...and instead something more like the 80/20 rule. Where you get a small amount of information (20%) and that is good enough for getting you through most situations (80%). To be more specific though, this video covers surface finishes vs penetrating finishes, how to prep your wood for them, how to apply them, and how I decide when to use a surface wood finish vs a penetrating oil wood finish. Not everything, but enough to get most woodworkers through most situations and projects. #Woodfinish #woodworking #wood Wood Peckers Tools ▸ Woodpeckers Tools (all the red stuff) - 🤍 // FOLLOW // ▸ Subscribe | 🤍 ▸ Patreon | 🤍 ▸ Instagram | 🤍

Unbelievably Easy DIY Wood Finish Recipe // Woodworking

Three ingredients make up the easiest to apply, quick drying wood finish. This video was sponsored by Squarespace. To get 10% off a site of your own, visit 🤍 Most folks think wood finishing is tricky business, but I like to keep things easy in my woodworking shop and I use this same three part oil wood finish on almost every piece I build. This easy to make wood finish recipe is also easy to make and apply, and dries quickly allowing multiple coats. This method requires the least prep work (goodbye sanding) and is also unbelievably easy to repair, fix any scratch or dent in your furniture finished with this same oil, and all you have to do is scuff the surrounding area and wipe on more finish. You also don't need a whole bunch of other finishing supplies for this method, no spray booth, no special finishing room, you just dust off your bench and wipe it on. Even the fumes of this finish are very mild! Because this has been my favorite wood finish for so many years of projects, it's the best wood finish I can recommend. How to Finish Wood in 3 Easy Steps | Just Ask Bruce

In this edition of "Just Ask Bruce" from Minwax®, Dave has an old nightstand that needs refinishing and some basic repairs. Instead of buying a new one, he wants to recycle this old piece of furniture to save money and fix it up to last a lifetime. Minwax® expert Bruce Johnson walks us through a simple, three-step wood finishing process to help Dave with his project : - Start by sanding the wood with 120-grit, then moving to a 220-grit sandpaper. - Use a pre-stain wood conditioner to ensure the stain applies and dries evenly, without blotches. - Apply a wood stain in your favorite shade with a natural bristle brush, along the direction of the grain. - Add a coat of clear protective finish for that extra bit of shine and long-lasting protection. Used in this video: Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner, Minwax® Wood Finish™ in English Chestnut, and Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane. Visit 🤍 for more how-to tips and project ideas.

How To Apply A Clear Natural Finish To Softwoods - Wood Finish Recipe 4 | Rockler Skill Builders

How to Apply a Natural Finish on Softwoods: Examples: Pine, Cedar, Poplar, etc. How to apply this finish: 1. Sand the project up through the grits until at least 220-grit a. It is a good idea to sand pieces that will be hard to reach before assembly. 2. Wipe the project with mineral spirits to check for glue splotches 3. Apply a sealer coat (Zinsser Sealcoat) of a shellac-based finish by wiping: flooding the surface with finish and wiping it off. 4. If you have any nail holes, cracks or defects in the wood, fill them now with a wood filler putty that matches the color of the oiled wood (sand smooth) 5. Apply at least two coats of a wipe-on polyurethane 6. Optional: After the finish has cured for 72 hours, apply a coat of high-quality paste wax and then polish it off. Simple Rustic Finish

After designing a custom Coffee Bar for my wife.. I was in search of a Old Rustic worn look to give it. Lots of research later.. I still hadn't dialed in the exact old worn color I wanted. After messing in the shop for the past few days, trying multiple stains and combinations. I ended up developing the technique of fire and Antique Glaze and a little sanding... well its finally starting to get that magic look I was shooting for. While I have seen both done separate I have never seen them both done together. Anyway... it seems to fit this project very well and the wife loves the color. If you have a antique finish you like.. WHICH FINISH IS THE BEST!? We test the leading four hard-wax oil finishes!

Which finish is the best? That is the question I had. I started this video with the intention of finding which hard wax oil was the best because that is what I want to use. Instead of taking someone else's word for it I decided to test them out for myself. What you have in this video is a completely unbiased conclusion. WHY DONT YOU USE LACQUER / POLY / CONVERSION VARNISH ETC.??? The answer.. I worked in a big custom furniture shop before this and that is all they used. If you want to make money and need to crank things out fast then you should use those finishes. They are the industry standard and are well excepted amongst our community. HOWEVER.. I do things on a higher level and my prices reflect that. I personally want the best for the furniture I put out, so top coat finishes are not even an option in my shop. I would consider using those finishes on something like a kitchen cabinet box, but not my furniture. Why are they bad? 1) When they fail they fail hard. The finish raises/separates from the wood and flakes off. 2) Touch up is not an option. Completely sand off and refinish when they fail or even get a scratch. 3) Aesthetics.. Looks like plastic. 4) They don't wear well. SOAP FINISH Get it here! 🤍 PATREON 🤍 We have opened up our Patreon and would love you to help support the channel directly. Simple CA Pen Finish

Wood Finish Recommendations for Beginners | Woodworking Tips

After you’ve overcome the challenges of building your project, are you fearful that the finish might ruin your woodwork?  That’s the way I felt about a lot of my projects, but with practice and education, I’ve overcome most of those fears.  We’ll show you how to get started to get some great finishing results. What types of wood finishes are there? There are many types of finishes, which is why this can be so confusing.  Here are the 5 main types of wood finishes that are commonly used: - Oil Finish - oil finishes are used mainly on fine furniture and mid century modern furniture.  It’s easy to apply but doesn’t offer much protection from liquids.  Boiled linseed oil, Danish oil, and Tung oil are the most common oils used for finishing.  Mineral oil is used for a food grade finish on cutting boards, charcuterie boards, wooden bowls, and cooking utensils. - Shellac Finish - a shellac finish is normally found on older furniture and antiques.  This is a fast drying finish that protects the wood, but it dissolves with alcohol, so it’s not good for surfaces where alcoholic drinks will be present - Lacquer Finish - this is also a fast drying finish and it’s not damaged by alcohol.  Lacquer is used on a lot of factory-made furniture because it dries quickly to support high production rates. The problem is, this is a very toxic finish and needs to be used with a lot of safety precautions. - Polyurethane Finish - this is a film finish that’s durable and protects the wood well from wear and tear.  It’s sometimes criticized for looking like plastic and taking away from the look of the wood.  Polyurethane is available in a water-based and oil-based finish.  The oil-based finish has a warm yellow tone to it whereas the water-based polyurethane has a clear look. - Varnish Finish - this is a unique oil-based finish that is flexible enough to be used on outdoor furniture where the wood expands and contracts.  When the wood moves, the finish moves with it and stays intact instead of splitting and breaking down. Wax is not a finish by itself, but is used in combination with another finish as a top coat. Recommendation for Beginners With all those choices, where do you start as a beginner?  Here’s what we recommend. Safety A word of caution about finishes - a lot of finishes use chemicals that you shouldn’t inhale.  Make sure you use a respirator with an organic filter.  When you wear a properly fitting respirator, you won’t be able to smell the finish.  Also protect your skin from absorbing the finish by wearing gloves. Don’t use Stains Pigment stains can hide the star of the show - the wood.  I’ve seen many projects where the stain has ruined the look of a piece because the woodworker didn’t know what they were doing.  As a new woodworker I suggest not using stains.  If you want your project to have a dark tone to it, use dark wood such as walnut.  For a medium wood tone, use cherry or hickory.  Let the wood you choose show it’s character and beauty! Selecting a Finish For beginners, I suggest keeping it simple and minimizing the tools you need.  Use either an oil finish or a wipe-on polyurethane.  You won’t need brushes or need to learn brushing techniques. An oil finish will protect the wood from minor dust and dirt, but it won’t protect it much from moisture, such as a drinking glass.  If you anticipate your piece being used to set glasses or dishes on, you’ll want to use a polyurethane finish. A wipe-on polyurethane finish goes on much thinner than a brushed on polyurethane.  For surfaces where there will be a lot of use, I suggest 6 coats of wipe-on finish to build up a thicker protective layer. Warning: When you’re done applying a finish, make sure to properly dispose of the application cloth.  Oily rags can heat up and start on fire all by themselves.  Ensure you read an understand the label for your finish to avoid a fire.
